We bought a house

On the darkest, shortest day of 2020 we pulled money from all kinds of places the sun doesn’t shine, and made our offer. We were as caught off guard as anyone else by how quickly it happened. But here you have it, sometimes you spend years preparing for a single moment, and sometimes you just know. (It needed a lot of work, but I just knew)

Once we closed, I stepped up to lead the 3 month renovation as our designer and GC. We blundered onto the rollercoaster and it took off. Technical drawings to contractor selection, budgeting, timelines, … re-budgeting…. timeline pushouts… re-budgeting… and furniture arrival day, which was a whole other level of project management.

Post-renovation, we hosted friends and family for 3 months before finally, we got to move in ourselves. It was tins and tins of paint, and loans, and magic. Terrifying, but (and maybe therefore) magic.

I like dining chairs that aren’t a set, but fall together just so.

Thank you to my best friend Erin for the one in pink. Everyone is surprised when I tell them it’s from Home Depot.

With the help of an IKEA solid oak countertop laser-cut and sanded to size, the dog crate is now a little armoire: part dog stuf, part room-enlarging mirror shenanigans, part mantelpiece… part altar just for Matthew’s diptyque candle. Those things are really just there to be seen.
